Unusual request: customer had just installed a new charcoal-grey front door and wanted the concrete-block driveway edging (about 80 linear feet) painted to match. Three previous quotes had said no, "exterior block can't be painted, it'll peel."
We took the job because outdoor masonry paint exists, it's just not what most painters use. The trade-off is honest: this is a 3-year finish, not a 10-year finish. We documented that in writing.
What we did
Seven hours, two-person crew:
- Pressure-washed the block with a fan-tip, gets rid of efflorescence (white salt crystals that bleed through cheap paint)
- Acid-etched the surface chemically, improves adhesion on concrete
- Two coats of elastomeric masonry paint (designed to flex with the substrate)
- Sealed the joints between the block and the asphalt apron
Honest expectations
We told the customer this finish needs a re-coat in three years, possibly sooner if there's a hard winter with heavy salt use. They accepted that. If you're considering exterior block painting, ask the painter what their warranty is. Anything more than 3 years on exterior block paint is marketing, not chemistry.
